TAMPA -
A group pushing for a downtown Tampa stadium for the
Tampa Bay Rays is seeking help from the commissioner of Major League Baseball.
BuildItDowntownTampa calls
itself a coalition of fans concerned about the team's future in the Tampa area. It surfaced
two years ago by announcing it was studying the feasibility of a new ballpark,
but it never has revealed its members or whether it has funding.
On Wednesday, the group's
executive director, Ryan Neubauer, said he sent a letter to baseball
Commissioner Bud Selig urging him to intervene in the Rays' standoff with St. Petersburg.
In the letter,
BuildItDowntownTampa asks the commissioner to make Major League Baseball's
position on the stadium debate known and assign a three-person stadium
committee to review it.
"While we are not trying to
get involved with the contractual lease issues between the Rays and the city of
St. Petersburg, we do believe that when those
lease issues are resolved between the parties, downtown Tampa is the premier location for the Rays,"
the letter says.
